Snaefell, Tynwald, Ben My Chree Fourteen ships had sailed the sea Proudly bearing a Manx name But there's one will never again Oh Ellan Vannin, of the Isle of Man Company Oh Ellan Vannin, lost in the Irish Sea At one a.m. in Ramsey bay Captain Teare was heard to say "Our contract said deliver the mail In this rough weather we must not fail" Oh Ellan Vannin, of the Isle of Man Company Oh Ellan Vannin, lost in the Irish Sea With a crew of twenty-one Manxmen Her passengers Liverpool businessmen Farewell Mona's Isle farewell This little ship was bound for hell Oh Ellan Vannin, of the Isle of Man Company Oh Ellan Vannin, lost in the Irish Sea Less than a mile from the Bar lightship By a mighty wave Ellan Vannin was hit She sank in the waters of Liverpool Bay There she lies until this day Oh Ellan Vannin, of the Isle of Man Company Oh Ellan Vannin, lost in the Irish Sea

Bedlam Boys 02:24
To see Mad Tom of Bedlam, ten thousand miles I've travelled Mad Maudlin goes on dirty toes, just to save her shoes from gravel And still I'll sing, bonny boys, bonny mad boys Bedlam boys are bonny For they all go bare and they live in the air, And they want no drink or no money. No gypsy lass no doxy, can take my Mad Tom from me. I'll dance all night, the stars I'll fight, the fray it shall become me. And still I'll sing, bonny boys, bonny mad boys Bedlam boys are bonny For they all go bare and they live in the air, And they want no drink or no money. So drink to Tom of Bedlam, ten thousand miles I've travelled Mad Maudlin goes on dirty toes, just to save her shoes from gravel And still I'll sing, bonny boys, bonny mad boys Bedlam boys are bonny For they all go bare and they live in the air, And they want no drink or no money.

Waiting in line for the rain gathering pieces of blue Frightened of cars and there’s too many stars And I’m counting my footsteps to you Somebody loved me ok I’m searching my mind to find who So send me to bed if I lied when I said That I’d always remember you Mary I don’t know my age anymore My Mother just said I’m a hundred and four Listen to me, leave me alone Mary I can’t find my way back home Everything’s in the wrong place everything’s broken in two I’ll start the repair when I find out just where And I’m counting my footsteps to you This place is just like a hotel or a prison sometimes I’m not sure For my postal address try ‘Just Sleeping’ I guess Or the weeping behind any door Mary I’m lost and there’s enemies near Speaking in voices I don’t want to hear Listen to me, leave me alone Mary I can’t find my way back home I’ve come here from so far away and my poor brain is broken in two But the scent of your hair sometimes hangs in the air And I’m counting my footsteps to you

This land on which I stand has changed but little over time, It's feet are planted in the sand, it's head is crowned in sky, So as I come to take my leave, a tear comes to my eye, But through the mist the Ghosts appear, of farewells from times gone by Goodbye to Lulworth Cove farewell, Farewell St Oswald Bay And hand in hand I'll take my place with the ghosts who've passed this way. Sweet Grace she stands upon the shore to wave her love to sea, Before he left he pledged his heart, one day his wife she'll be, Until that day she'll watch and wait, with a heart as strong as gold, She'll hold his love inside her heart, 'til once more his hand she'll hold. Goodbye to Lulworth Cove farewell Farewell St Oswald Bay And hand in hand I'll take my place with the ghosts who've passed this way. Mathilde she lays upon the downs, she's breathing in the sun, Her freedom here at last she'll find, her new life has begun, No looking back to time gone by, she'll take the ship this night And sail away from Bindon Down, sweet freedom in her sight. Goodbye to Lulworth Cove farewell Farewell St Oswald Bay And hand in hand I'll take my place with the ghosts who've passed this way.

For three hundred years we lived and worked the sea, And we built our homes together by the sea, We lived worked and we played and right here we should have stayed. The greed of one man, he stole it all away. In the name of progress he dredged away the sand, to build the docks on Devonport land, No one asked us if we cared, the poor can always be spared, He came to Hallsands to haul away the sand. Haul away Hallsands bay, When I leave this earth all trace will pass away, Sing this song keep the memory strong, Lest they should try again to wash our dreams away, For many years they scoured the very sea bed, 'Till the sight of boats it filled our hearts with dread, The beach receded to the wall then our homes began to fall, Time was ticking for Hallsands Bay, Haul away Hallsands bay, When I leave this earth all trace will pass away, Sing this song keep the memory strong, Lest they should try again to wash our dreams away, In January 1917 One last storm left nothing where once our homes had been, We clung to life all the night, nothing left by morning light, Except the ruins of Hallsands Bay. Haul away Hallsands bay, When I leave this earth all trace will pass away, Sing this song keep the memory strong, Lest they should try again to wash our dreams away,

Rio Grande 03:53
I'll sing you my song of the fish of the sea. Oh Rio! So listen ye well and I'll sing it for thee For he's bound for the Rio Grande. Then away love, away, Oh Rio! And fare ye well my own true love, For he's bound for the Rio Grande. They've bid their farewells to the girls of this town, Oh Rio! And with their half pay we'll buy our silk gowns, For he's bound for the Rio Grande, He think I don't know it but surely I do, Oh Rio! There's a girl in each port who thinks that he's true, And he's bound for the Rio Grande. Then away love, away, Oh Rio! And fare ye well my own true love, For he's bound for the Rio Grande. His ship went sailing out over the Bar, Oh rio! And pointed it's head to the Southern Star, For he's bound for the Rio Grande. And I waved him away with my lacy 'kerchief, Oh Rio! Then I slipped me away like a night bound theif, For he's bound for the Rio Grande, Then away love, away, Oh Rio! And fare ye well my own true love, For he's bound for the Rio Grande. So man the good capstan and run it around, Oh Rio! And heave up the anchor to this jolly sound, For he's bound for the Rio Grande, And while he's away my heart will be true, Oh Rio! But 'till he returns I have my fun too, For he's bound for the Rio Grande. Then away love, away, Oh Rio! And fare ye well my own true love, For he's bound for the Rio Grande. Now I've sung you my song of the fish in the sea, Oh Rio! There's plenty for him and there's plenty for me, When he's bound for the Rio Grande.

Come one, come all, Come and hear the call, For to fight for land and King, Be of all good cheer, Do not tarry here, For with one voice we'll sing Heart of oak our ships, Heart of oak our men, Climb aboard and set the sail, And when victory is done, Back home we'll come, And to England raise a cheer!

Hard Times 04:35
Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears While we all sup sorrow with the poor There's a song that will linger forever in our ears Oh, hard times, come again no more While we seek mirth and beauty and music, light and gay There are frail forms fainting at the door Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say Oh, hard times, come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more Tis a sigh that is wafted across the troubled wave Tis a wail that is heard upon the shore Tis a dirge that is murmured around the lowly grave Oh hard times come again no more 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary Hard times, hard times, come again no more Many days you have lingered around my cabin door Oh, hard times, come again no more There's a pale weeping maiden who toils her life away With a worn heart whose better days are o'er Though her voice would be merry, 'tis sighing all the day Oh, hard times come again no more

Well I thought I heard the old man say, Leave her Johnny, Leave her, Well you've bairns to feed and the rent to pay, It's time for you to leave her, Leave her Johnny, leave her! Oh leave her Johnny, leave her! 'Though the journey's long and the hard winds blow, It's time for you to leave her. It's a long hard pull to the next pay day, Leave her Johnny, leave her, Southampton boys with you all the way, it's time for you to leave her. Leave her Johnny, leave her! Oh leave her Johnny, leave her! 'Though the journey's long and the hard winds blow, It's time for you to leave her. Well I pray that we should ne'er more see, Leave her Johnny, leave her. More hungry days the likes of these, It's time for you to leave her. Leave her Johnny, leave her! Oh leave her Johnny, leave her! 'Though the journey's long and the hard winds blow, It's time for you to leave her. The coal strike brought us down so low, Leave her Johnny, leave her, To America for a wage we'll go, It's time for you to leave her. Leave her Johnny, leave her! Oh leave her Johnny, leave her! 'Though the journey's long and the hard winds blow, It's time for you to leave her. But that great ship ne'er saw New York town, Leave her Johnny, leave her, The Atlantic ice had brought her down, It's time for you to leave her. Leave her Johnny, leave her! Oh leave her Johnny, leave her! 'Though the journey's long and the hard winds blow, It's time for you to leave her.

On Rossal plain where the heather grows, I left my heart in the fields we sowed, To my highland home no more I'll go, On Rossal plain, on Rossal plain. My clan have always tilled this land, And my bairns and I to it's glens were bound, Until Sellar's men did our homes burn down, On Rossal plain, on Rossal plain, When the factor came as darkness fell, With eight strong men for our fight to quell, And to board the doors and us expel, No more my home, no more my home. All through the night we walked the land, From hearth to hearth for one kind hand, But no help would come, for fear stalked the land, No haven here, no haven here. From thence we came to these foreign shores, We are exiled here by their savage laws, But I'll have you know that my heart's forever yours, Land of my birth, land of my birth. And in my mind I'll stake my claim, And I'll walk the fields of Syre again, And when I die may my body be lain, On Rossal plain, on Rossal plain.

about

The Story of The Toledo Sessions:

This album is a collection of stories. Some are historic, others are based on folklore and the whole under the title ‘The Toledo Sessions’ relates to my own story which you can read below:

For much of my childhood, we drove around as a family in an inherited, blue Triumph Toledo. It had a wooden dashboard, leather seats and a LOT of rust! It was special because in it I gained my love for singing and stories. Dad and I sang songs from James Taylor, Ralph McTell and The Spinners whilst on our way to collect Mum from nursing shifts. Hughie Jones’s song ‘Ellan Vannin’ was a favourite and it captures this fantastic combination of singing and storytelling - I have recorded it as the first track.

I hope you enjoy listening to The Toledo Sessions as much as I have enjoyed recording them!
